http://www.emich.edu/fordgallery/

Feb. 17-March 26
Women’s Ware/Women’s Wear
University Gallery
Reception: Wed., Feb. 18, 4-6 p.m. followed by:

Panel Discussion with fiber artist Erica Spitzer Rasmussen and EMU art professors Jennifer Locke, Gretchen Otto, and Brooks Stevens
Student Center, Rm. 310A from 6-7 p.m.
How has the role of feminism in the visual arts changed during succeeding generations? In light of the various phases of feminist theory, how do works of art made by women about women resonate today? Women’s Ware/Women’s Wear brings together the work of approximately fifteen artists working in a variety of media who explore the role that gender plays in women’s art today. Crossing all disciplinary boundaries, this exhibition goes beyond the literal to a deeply metaphoric examination of women’s thoughts, feeling, and ideas.

Thurs., March 12, 7:00-8:30 p.m.
Feminists Are Funny: Guerilla Girls on Tour
Sponberg Theatre

Combining the visual and performing arts, Feminists Are Funny addresses the lack of opportunities for women and people of color. This energetic romp through herstory provides an up-to-date account of this group’s latest actions in politics, the performing arts and the media; a recreation of some of their street theatre protests; and a look at some of the funniest female activists and their accomplishments. A lively discussion with the audience will follow the performance. An EMU student will be cast to play one of the roles. The event will educate the community about the current state of sexism, while proving that feminists are funny.
